Baby's first phone call and other happenings

Apparently last weekend Joseph decided to give his buddy Mary a call. I had just called her to firm up plans for contra dancing that night and then I must have handed Joseph the phone to play with as I often do (when I am really in need of something to entertain him). She says she received a call from my number and could hear Joseph making baby noises on the other end! She had a little chat and then told him “tell your mom I will see her tonight.” Maybe Joseph was trying to get in on the contra dancing action? And why isn’t there a space in my baby book for “baby’s first cell phone call?”

Today Joseph's beloved daycare provider told me that she has hardly ever seen a child who dump's things, moves things, and generally tears things apart as much as Joseph!! She has a lot of experience on which to base this observation (2 children, used to be the director of daycare center, now runs a home daycare). I guess this explains why I spend all day running after him trying to clean up his messes . . .

Still no walking (I am trying not to think of this as a hurry, but it is so hard to resist). However, he is completely competent and very FAST at cruising along holding onto furniture. Last weekend he even started letting go. It only happens when he is very distracted and only last for a couple seconds. How fast things change!

I am trying hard to come up with a post that doesn't have to do with Joseph, but I haven't thought of anything yet . . .

And finally, for the benefit of Jenn (my vegetarian best friend):

MEAT JOSEPH HAS EATEN

  • Chicken
  • Ham
  • Turkey
  • Roast Beef
  • Hot Dog (whatever that is)
  • Sausage
  • Corned Beef (Saint Patty's Day)
  • Hamburger
  • Beef Stew
  • Salmon

But he does really love tofu too!

Cute curly haired guy

Excuses for not taking lots of photos lately:
  • It seems like Joseph has been sick for the last month. He has had everything from croup to RSV to an ear infection and of course lots of not so attractive snottyness. Nothing has seemed to bother him much (except when it comes to sleep) it just hasn’t been very picturesque.
  • Last week he also got quite a shiner--his first black eye. Not too pretty.
  • We are currently redoing our kitchen so the house is completely torn apart.
  • Last week I decided to try and knit Joseph a sweater. I really have no idea what I am doing, but I am hoping my enthusiasm will make it work out. I have been working on it obsessively.
  • I have finally started working. Only one day a week and at the local bookstore (pattern?) but it's a start.
  • Lots of time has been spent nursing my wounded pride. I have lost the bet. Joseph is not walking yet. He is trying though. He is just one big ball of energy. He cruises everywhere. Fast. And he is quite the climber. Besides the always great fun of climbing up the stairs, he climbed onto the couch for the first time yesterday and today he climbed right up one of those Fisher Price play slides. So actually I would say most of my time is spend chasing him around.

However Jenn has been harassing me so much I finally took a few pictures yesterday and today.

Beautiful boy. Look at those curls!

Can you wave Joseph?

It is pretty easy to tell when Joseph is learning a new motor skill (still something new everyday); however I find it much harder to see his linguistic progress. He makes all sorts of noises and sounds including of course "mama" and "dada," but I haven't seen any proof that he knows what he is talking about. He will mimic you, but that is not the same! Now for the first time I have some of that proof for which I have been waiting.

Last week we decided to try and teach him to wave. One evening we worked on it and he caught on! We were delighted. He was so into it that he did it all the time. When he woke up in the middle of the night and I went in to him he was waving away. Now the trick has further improved. As of two days ago if you say "can you wave Joseph?" HE WAVES!!! This is so exciting to me. Our first real verbal communication (beyond me responding to his cries/screams). Still waiting on communication going the other direction. I predict his first word will be “Kitty.”

How to make Joseph smile—or hopefully laugh so hard he gets the hiccups!

  1. Kiss him! Kisses, kisses, kisses everywhere.
  2. Bring kitty near. Anything to do with Kitty is HILARIOUS. Chasing Kitty (or Kitty hunting) is probably his favorite activity (after eating).
  3. Demonstrate your best dance moves. Shake your booty!
  4. Then pick him up and dance together. Lots of bouncing and spinning appreciated.
  5. Give him something to climb on. Tired parents works well. As do stairs, boxes, pretty much anything. (A new trick this week is that he can climb up the entire set of stairs by himself!)
  6. Use a different accent or funny voice.
  7. Mke a silly face.
  8. Tickle, tickle, tickle.
  9. Dust. The swiffer duster is apparently very comical.
  10. Make silly noises. Beep, sneeze, hiccup . . .
  11. Smile at him.
  12. Find a mirror.
  13. Wave, put your hands in the air, clap . . .
  14. Find an exciting toy. Which usually means something that was certainly not intended to be a toy. Wooden spoon, papers, magazines, box, shoes, Tupperware, belt . . .
  15. As far as toys go balls are probably the favorite. I just got him a big huge yoga ball that he loves. He likes it if you throw balls or bean bags at him or drop them on his head. Sounds weird but he absolutely cracks up.
  16. Open a door and let him make a mad dash for it.
  17. The list goes on and on. It is amazing the crazy things you do to hear that giggle--and the totally unexpected things that get it going.

Crazy times

You always hear about how “things change ever day” with babies. Up until this point I did not feel that this was true at all. In general each milestone seemed to be long awaited and very hard work. All of a sudden though the pace just seems to be accelerating like crazy. Something new is always happening. The difference between what he is doing today and a week is nearly unbelievable to me. If you told me that he will be playing basketball in a month I would probably believe you. It is so amazing and crazy. Examples: It was probably about two weeks ago he figured out how to sit up on his own and maybe a week and a half ago he just barely started pulling up on things. About the same time he really started feeding himself food (picking up chunks with his fingers). Maybe four days ago he all of sudden was a lot better at pulling up and can do it just about anywhere on anything. Two days ago was the first time he started “creeping” while holding onto furniture. Today he suddenly decided to climb up three steps, to practice standing in his crib instead of sleeping, and even to crawl in the typical style. He is into everything all the time. We think he is waving now and he definitely will hold a blanket in front of his face and then lower it to play peak-a-boo. Brad and I have a bet: If he is walking (or to be very clear, we decided if he takes 5 steps by himself) by March 12th (a month from when we made the deal) I win. Holy crap!

I am sure I am missing a bunch of his other new tricks and I am also sure I sound like a complete gushing/obsessed-with-her-baby new mom. But, well, I guess I am.

Videos!?

So, let's see how my technical savvy is doing. I tried to upload two videos below. One is to document Joseph's special way of "crawling" (many have suggested I do so) and the other to show his new trick of standing! I know the second is going sideways, but it was cuter then the ones I took going the right direction. My tech savvy isn't good enough to figure out how to rotate it! Also, they are super short since they are just taken with my camera. Let me know if this works. All my best to everyone. (And yes, he is in his pajamas in the middle of the afternoon. Why not?)

Crawling?!?! Plus lots of rambling . . .

So, lately there has been an ongoing debate as to whether Joseph is “crawling.” For the last 3 weeks or so he has been moving all over the place at an ever increasing pace. He kind of scoots along on the ground in what a lot of people refer to as the “commando.” Basically it is crawling with his tummy on the floor. He does get into the traditional crawling position and rock back and forth but then he lowers down and takes of in his slither style of locomotion. Of course it has often been pointed out that he has a rather large tummy so it might be particularly hard for him to get it off the floor. He gets where he wants to go, and fast, so it certainly works. But is it crawling? Brad says yes, I have maintained that crawling is tummy off the floor. Either way he is moving and it is scary. Now begins the childproofing and chasing, chasing everywhere. Of course it is really cute too and fun to see him changing and developing so fast. I feel like we have hit the age where everyday he is doing something new. Before each little development seemed to build up over a long period, now they are just coming all the time, seemingly without warning or preparation. What will be next?

Other updates and new experiences:

  • Twice he has pulled himself up to standing. The first time was in the middle of the night when I set him in the sitting position in his crib while I grabbed something (he still can’t get to sitting himself). I looked over and there he was in the upright position. However, I was so tired I didn’t think that much about it. Then, last Friday, I sat him down next to the bathtub while I was putting on my makeup. I lined up his rubber duckys on the edge of the tub so he could practice taking them down. I guess he knocked one into the tub because I glanced over and he was STANDING!! It just seems so weird to see him in the upright position. Very strange. He hasn’t done it again but if you put him in the standing position, say holding onto the sofa, he will happily stay there for quite awhile by himself. And he loves it (has for quite awhile) if you hold his hands and walk him around. This almost always makes him in a good mood (though for the person holding onto him it’s a bit hard on the back).
  • He also loves to kick things. Hard. He tends to line himself up with his feet against a door, wall, etc. . . and then just wail away as hard as he can.
  • His 5th tooth came in a couple days ago and the 6th is just about to come through! Yikes! The other 4 are now getting really big.
  • The best “toys” are certainly not toys. All babies seem have a sense of when something is meant to be played with and when it is not and therefore oh soo much more fun.
  • At his last appointment (around 8 months) he was 29 1/8 inches long, his head was huge (I forget the measurement), and he weighed 25 pounds, 10 ounces. Still completely off the charts.
  • We are starting to work on eating pieces of things rather than just purees. And yes I have finally been making more of his baby food. Though he certainly preferred the store-bought stuff to moms cooking at first, he has adjusted. He is very into his food and if you don’t feed him fast enough he yells at you! He is also now no longer a vegetarian and on Sunday he had his first “cookie” (teething biscuit type thing) a la grandma.
  • He has just started going to daycare one day a week which is so great for all of us. He absolutely loves the big kids and mom gets some freedom/time to actually get stuff done. I must admit however it did take me two hours to leave the first time—a bit embarrassing.
  • I realize I never marked the sitting milestone on here (important since this is my “scrapbook”). He didn't start sitting well by himself until about 7 months. He might have been able to do it a bit sooner but I was scared to let him try because I was worried about him falling over. Now I know falling over is part of the learning process!
  • He still hasn’t been on the outside as long as the inside (my tummy) though we are getting close.
  • My best friend Jennifer is pregnant!! Besides being sooo happy for her and her wonderful husband Travis, I am selfishly ecstatic to have her as a mommy friend. It is amazing to get to go through this with my closest friend since preschool. From swing sets and play pretend, junk food and horses, cornfield parties and college, to being parents! Amazing.
  • He is getting quite a mop top. A few people have mentioned I might need to get him a haircut soon. This was quite a surprise to me as I am still trying to figure out how to cut his nails. It never occurred to me that he might need his hair cut sometime. Anyways, I plan to let him get a nice full head of beautiful golden curls!
  • We have a great baby group that meets every Wednesday morning. I really really enjoy it and Joseph seems to as well. Joseph is the youngest by a month and the mother of the next youngest (9 ½ months) and I come with questions in mind for the more experienced moms with older children!
  • Is he screaming in the car? Turn on Loretta Lynn. Seriously. It works almost every time. Usually he contentedly nods off to sleep. I've had the same CD in my car since he was born and am scared to change it. Though a change would be nice for me . . .

Wow, this got long. So much going on I guess. If you made it to the end, congrats! I hope everyone is well!

Holiday Pictures!!

WOW it has been a long time since I last posted! Sorry about that. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We had lots of fun and Joseph put up with being dragged all over the place. Below are some of my favorite December pictures, though with all the busyness it was hard to take many. Also, I am really curious who actually looks at this crazy thing. So if you get a chance let me know! (Except Jenn-I know you look at it since you have been telling me eveyday for the last month to update). Hopefully another post will soon follow.
